The Island: Iraklia - A Retreat in its Own Right

Page 1 | 2

There are two fine beaches on Iraklia within walking distance of your accommodation; the first, by the port, is five minutes away; the other, the larger of the two, Livadi, is fifteen minutes on foot. There are several more beaches accessible only by caique; the scenery en route is stunning.

For those who like to be more active, you can enjoy the rugged beauty of the island's mountains. The cave of Agios Ioannis is a 1.5 hour trek; wear good shoes and expect breathtaking views.

On a more practical note, Iraklia, though small, is well equipped. There is a bakery in the old village of Panagia (the baker delivers); a Kafeneion 'Mellissa'; one Supermarket 'Perigali', and a small Gift Shop. The island cuisine provides the ideal opportunity to eat healthily and there are four or five excellent restaurants from which to choose. Finally, there is the infamous Bar Aki, which needs little explanation.

Having only been introduced to electricity 20 years ago, the locals are understandably proud of their own website.

"Travellers who might have stumbled upon Iraklia go to great lengths to conceal their whereabouts, lest their precious hideaway be discovered. The island’s solitude is precious, as are the close ties between the local community and its rare visitors. Whether exploring its caves, basking on its beaches, or sipping coffee under the starlight in a café, Iraklia’s tangible and intangible charms will envelop you." - Let's GO Guide.
